Event Description: Economists, analysts, governments, bankers and companies spend an extraordinary amount of time analysing China’s position in the world.

When will it overtake America’s economy to be the world’s number one? Will the renminbi eventually replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency? Will Shanghai be the most important financial centre in Asia within 10 years – and in the world shortly thereafter?

Some would say Shanghai is rapidly getting there. Two of its claims already include being the world’s largest domestic bond market and the world’s second largest stock market. And while a significant barrier remains in that the RMB is not freely convertible, China is moving slowly towards internationalisation of the currency.
Multinational corporations operating in China have dealt with obstacles and complexities for years. Ironically, as regulations relax, the environment has become more complex because it is essential that companies pay attention to the regulatory changes, and to understand the opportunities these may present.

Meanwhile, China’s companies are moving rapidly overseas, attracted by low property costs and high output in America, and cheap assets in other parts of the world. This international outreach is also marked by complexities because Chinese MNCs face substantial regulatory hurdles at home, while they must overcome the nuances and barriers within other economies and cultures they have not had to deal with previously.
